Kia ora ano koutou

Ngā mihi ki a tatau ngā kaimahi GIS. This second panui gives further details regarding PLACE 2015, the fifth software neutral Maori GIS conference to be held at the Waitaha Room at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Bay of Islands, 10th to 12 June 2015.

9am Wednesday 10th June through to 1pm Friday 12th June

As previously advised, in keeping with the kaupapa of capacity building, for those small roopu who have tiny budgets and huge workloads, we have kept to a conference registration fee at an affordable $100 per delegate.

Please note that late registrations will incur a $50 penalty. The early bird cut-off date is 1st June, after which time the registration fee will rise to $150, so get online and register early whanau!

Online registrations can be made at PLACE2015 register

Due to the affordability of the registration fee, no one day or two day registration discounts will apply (but if necessary you can send your tono to the Komiti and we’ll have a korero). As with the previous conferences – shared registration fees for delegates from the same roopu will be available for those who need to share attendance at the conference with their colleagues (but hopefully you’ll be able to attend the whole conference). The opportunity for field trips are being investigated as will be a conference dinner and these costs will be additional to the registration fee.

Accomodation, breakfast and dinner is all in the hands of the delegate. We have talked to the Copthorne and they have offered discounted room rates for delegates (see below and use the attached pdf booking when making your booking). Sharing accommodation is always an option so we know delegates will find something that works for them. The hotel has buffet and full cooked breakfast options available and the restaurant is open in the evenings too.

Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Bay of Islands
Standard Garden View Room – $110 per night
Superior Harbour View Room – $120 per night
Superior Plus Water View Room – $160 per night
Water view Suite – $180 per night

There are other accommodation options within walking distance to the venue from backpackers to motels. Our local komiti member is checking these out for you to see how we can make it affordable.

If backpackers or motels or the hotel is not for you, there is an option for Marae accommodation – just over the short bridge from the venue. Discuss your marae accommodation questions directly with Waitangi Wood at [email protected]
Conference programme

Usually, over 100 delegates representing iwi/roopu from Muriwhenua to Murihiku have attended our conferences as well as many NMO (non Maori organisations). Presentations have ranged from how to go about procuring GIS capability to environment mapping and monitoring, managing Maori GIS projects to iwi heritage mapping, government projects, and more. This year, our hui will again include a presentation from our international indigenous whanau (via Skype) and we are planning to continue the technical workshops that proved popular last conference.
As with our previous conferences, vendors and agencies will be on-site with the latest in GIS software technology and projects, providing the opportunity to ask them for advice or answer some burning questions.
We have a couple of minor changes to our conference format that we think you’ll be happy with and we’ll let you know as soon as we confirm them.
Call for Presentations
PLACE 2015 (People, Landscape, Assets, Communication, Education)
We’re getting excited over the range of presentations that are being offered but there’s still space left. If you are doing GIS projects and would like to share your experiences with us, we encourage and invite past and new presenters to submit a presentation outline to
[email protected] and providing us with:
A short paragraph about your presentation; and
A short profile about yourself for the conference programme

The presentations should focus on Maori GIS related projects relevant to Maori aspirations and follow a very simple format: You are asked to deliver a 15 minute presentation and participate in a panel discussion afterwards with the rest of your theme presenters.
If you have an exciting old or new technical session you would like to run (technical sessions are within each theme) we encourage you to submit a technical workshop outline too!
And, let us know if you are interested in a spot in the very popular lightning talks (currently on Thursday 11th June).
Presentation notification
All submitted outlines will be forwarded to the komiti for consideration and you will be will be notified as soon as possible.
We welcome your enquiry if you are interested in providing sponsorship or have some other form of tautoko that you would like to offer. Please let one of the komiti know or email [email protected]
